As a result of the enactment of the Civil Partnership Bill, UKLGIG is
now focusing most of our energy on the issue of lesbian and gay asylum.
Following a successful case in the House of Lords in 1999, the law now
recognises that a well-founded fear of persecution for being lesbian or
gay may form the basis of a claim for asylum.
If you would like to volunteer and help UKLGIG to
support gay and lesbian asylum seekers in either of the categories below,
or if you have other skills to offer, please

The Asylum Project is looking for volunteers who can
speak the following foreign languages:
Arabic
Farsi
French
Spanish
Turkish/Kurdish
Urdu
Russian
Portuguese
Hindi
German
You will be helping the Executive Director to deal with
cases where language is a barrier. Language difficulties could prevent
gay and lesbian asylum seekers from presenting their case properly which
could have an irreversible impact on their future lives.
Country Researchers
The Group has become increasingly concerned by the lack of information
available concerning the human rights situation for lesbians and gay men
around the world. We are, therefore, now undertaking a research project
to provide this information and we need volunteers.
You will be working with some of London's leading immigration lawyers
researching the human rights situation for lesbians or gay men around
the world. In some cases, such research will form the basis for complete
country reports, but it may also be used as part of our regular input to
the Country of Origin Information Service. COIS operates independently
of Home office "policy", but their data is used by Home Office
caseworkers in arguing cases. It is in everyone's interests that
the information they draw on is up to date, relevant and accurate.
If you, or anyone you know of would like more information about our
work, please direct them to this website.
